Welcome back! I trust everyone had a relaxing and wonderful Christmas break! 2013 is going to be a stellar year and I look forward to working with all the students who are in my care!
A few items of interest:
MAP testing
MAP testing will take place for all students in the next few weeks. Although MAP is new to our district (replacing STAR testing), it is a useful tool to assess students' progress in reading, math and science. MAP is computer based and is given during the regularly scheduled lab time. Assessments occur 3 times a year. If you have any questions, let me know or contact your child's teacher.
5th Grade
Our economics unit is off to a wonderful start! We have been looking at coins, history of money, inflation, supply & demand, and have much more to learn. In the next few weeks, students will begin their partner-project that will be unveiled at our Economics Fair on March 6th at the Board Office. Students will be researching and putting together a presentation. Look for more info in a few weeks.
4th Grade
We are finishing our biography of George Washington Carver and doing presentations in our G/T classroom this week and next. After this, students will select a famous scientist or inventor to research and do a project on. Projects could be something like a Power Point, a Prezi, an alphabet book, a game board, a mobile, diorama - the possibilities are endless really.
3rd Grade
We have been doing Shared Inquiry using Junior Great Books. I LOVE this program! It leads to great discussion, sharing of individual ideas, some debates, and most importantly encourages kids to dig into the text and back up their opinions with evidence from the writing. Great skills to build for college!
2nd & 1st Grades - "Talent Pool"
We have been doing a variety of activities from the P.E.T.S. curriculum that challenge students' thinking, creativity, and skill building.
