Our fourth week is
complete! Next week, Mrs. Timmons and I, along with all the other 4th
and 5th grade math teachers in Muscatine, will be gone Monday
through Thursday. We will be attending a math class for teachers, and we hope
to bring back research-based best practices for our students. I really do not
like being gone, but Mrs. Trosen is a wonderful substitute, so your child is in
good hands!
This week we worked
more on converting metric units, such as millimeters to meters, grams to
kilograms, and milliliters to liters. We also began our work on ordering
decimals and decimal fractions, along with looking at the expanded form of a
number. For example, 34.652 is (3 x 10) + (4 x 1) + (6 x 0.1) + (5 x 0.01) + (2
x 0.01).
In science, we wrapped
up our first investigation about Day and Night, discussed what causes day and
night, and reviewed how shadows change throughout the day. The rotation of the
earth versus the revolution of earth around the sun were also studied. Vocabulary
terms we learned were axis, north pole (Polaris), rotation, revolution, day,
night, and shadow. Feel free to quiz your child!
