Hopefully, you have
already received and returned the conference notecards. If you haven’t, please
check your child’s agenda, as they were stapled into the agendas yesterday.
Next Tuesday, the 5th graders in Muscatine will be
traveling to Monsanto’s Outdoor Education Area. Please make sure your student
dresses for the weather and wears closed-toe shoes (i.e. no flip-flops or
sandals).
Academics -
We have finished our investigation of the Moon in science. Our
next investigation is the Solar System.
In math, we have been multiplying whole numbers and decimal
fractions, comparing decimals, and using estimation to justify the
reasonableness of a product. Next week, we will move into dividing decimal
fractions by whole numbers.
We are still embracing mistakes and stuck points! Persevering
through tough problems until we find our errors and get to the correct solution
is what will make us better problem solvers.
The motto in our math lab is “If it doesn’t challenge you, it won’t
change you.” Encourage your child to
keep trying even when it seems impossible.
Homework I’ve sent home this week is what is called
“foundational skills.” These are skills
students should have been exposed to in previous grades. Before sending it home, we’ve also taken
class time to go over the concepts and review.
Many students are getting homework done before the end of the day.
Take care,
Mrs. Steele
