We are in the midst
of LONG DIVISION! Woo hoo!! This can either be really fun or really painful. We
are working on dividing three- and four-digit dividends by two-digit divisors
with two- and three-digit quotients and making connections to a written method.
Students know the
three steps we take in solving a division problem:
1. Estimate
it
2. Do the math
3. Check the
answer by multiplying the quotient with the divisor and adding any
remainder.
For example, we are
working out problems such as
261/49 574/82 9,152/27 3,164/45
and “Mr. Riley baked
1,692 cookies. He sold them in boxes of 36 cookies each. How much money will he
collect if he sold them for $8 per box?”
Thank you for working
with your child on multiplication facts! Keep it up, please! Besides basic math
facts, feel free to do “skip counting,” too. We recently counted by 21 (21, 42,
63, 84, etc) and a few other numbers. This is great practice for mental math.
With Christmas coming,
could I gently suggest Santa stuffs your child’s stocking with a few handy
school supplies? Most students need to
replenish their pencil boxes with pencils, erasers, and glue sticks.
In science, we have begun our unit on nutrition. Next week we will be doing an investigation
that involves finding out how much fat/oil foods contain. We need food samples. Please choose anything off the
following list, and send along with your child in a Ziploc baggie or small
plastic container by Monday, December 8th.
