Our second full week is
complete. Students are building stamina during our Daily 3 rotations. We try to
rotate through three stations each day: Math with Teacher, Math with Someone,
and Math by Myself. During Math with Teacher, there are about 6 to 8 students
in each group that get more individualized attention and we are able to discuss
challenging problems. Math with Someone sometimes involves a math game with
one, two, or three others. Math by Myself is usually the problem set of the
day. In our Math by Myself, we have also used the computers, where students use
Manga High Math, a website that challenges students with the exact math
standard that we are currently covering.
This week we’ve mainly
reviewed and learned (again, or for the first time) how to multiply a decimal
by 10, 100, and 1000. We are also investigating dividing by 10, 100, and 1000.
The “new math” places much emphasis on understanding why and how. So, we’ve
covered this concept using the place value chart. Again, feel free to quiz your
child with an example, such as 4.568 times 10, times 100, times 1000. See if
she/he can explain why the digit 5 in 4.568 moves from the tenths place to
another place (value).
We also perform “Math
Sprints.” Sprints are timed fluency
practice. Students are given Sprint A, then we talk about patterns, mark our
correct answers, and then they’re given Sprint B. We compare how well we improved, and
celebrate the improvement. The students
have really enjoyed these!
In science, Mrs. Hagens
has been doing a fantastic job introducing “systems” (think ecosystems). Students have built a redworm habitat, and
have read, watched a video, played an interactive game on food chains, and are
continuing to learn new concepts.
School supplies: Mrs.
Steele greatly underestimated the amount of glue sticks students will
need. Already, several students have each
used up one glue stick. Speak with your student about keeping a supply of glue
sticks here at school. Mrs. Steele or
Mrs. Hagens will also send home a yellow note that indicates what he/she needs.

Save the date! The Mulberry Tailgate Party is Friday,
September 25th. Mrs. Steele
is heading up this fun activity!
So....she could use some help! J Your
help is only needed for 30 minute shifts to help serve food, take tickets, or
clean up. Please see the flyer that went
home yesterday regarding the Tailgate Party.
In 5th
grade, students take charge of room activities.
In both our homerooms, students have already gathered and decided which
party committee they will serve on. This
means your child is part of a group that is responsible for organizing games,
supplying snacks, drinks, and tableware.
These are our committees for the year:
