Our second full week is
complete. I am impressed with the stamina the students are building during our
Daily 3 rotations. We try to rotate through three stations each day: Math with
Teacher, Math with Someone, and Math by Myself. During Math with Teacher, there
are about 8 students in each group that get more individualized attention and
we are able to discuss challenging problems. Math with Someone usually involves
a math game with one, two, or three others. Math by Myself is usually the
problem set of the day. In our Math with Others, we have also used the
computers, where I’ve introduced the students to Manga High Math, a website
that I can customize by challenging students with the exact math standard that
we are currently covering.
Two to three times per
week, students do a “Math Minute,” which is meant to be a review of skills
acquired from the last five years. Students record how well they did on a
graph. In addition to this, we also
perform “Math Sprints.” Sprints take the
place of Muskie Math as a timed fluency practice. Students are given Sprint A,
then we talk about patterns, mark our correct answers, and then they’re given
Sprint B. We compare how well we
improved, and also chart our improvement.
Last year, many of our
students used IXL, and/or Success Maker during our Intervention/Computer Lab
time. This year, Moby Max takes the place of both those programs. I’m sending
home with this note your child’s login information for Moby Max. Feel free to
allow your student to login and work through the 5th grade
curriculum in any subject area.
I’m also sending home
this weekend the “Night-Sky Log” for night-sky observations. Please begin your
observations and have your student return the log on Friday, September 5th.
